5 Lazy-Girl Approved Tips for Your Best HEALTHY Hair (from a Hairdresser)
As a lazy, low-maintenance gal myself, I want an easy lifestyle that will maintain my hair’s beauty without compromising its health. There are certain things we can do and routines we can stick with to save time and money on our hair while maintaining its beauty. Here are 5 and a bonus tip at the the end!
Keep your hair long
Short hair is so. much. maintenance. It’s not true that short hair is easier to take care of — maybe for the first couple of months, but once it starts growing, you will need to keep it short and maintained because every hair counts. With short hair, you can see everything. And, what’s worse, is it can really bother you. If you have a pixie, the grow-out can be so irritating when the hairs start poofing around the ears and the neck hairs start itching.
Keeping your hair long gives you way more flexibility than short hair. You can just pull it up into a ponytail when you don’t want to style it, and hiding dirty hair days becomes so much easier with a little spritz of dry shampoo. So if you’re thinking about cutting your hair short to make your life easier, think again.
Use professional hair products
Professional hair products - from shampoos, conditioners, masks, and styling products - are so much more potent than drugstore products. Professional products just work, and they do the job easily and quickly, giving you more time to go about your life and not have to worry about why your hair isn’t styling the way it should.
My personal favorite cleanser is Hairstory New Wash in the Original formula and, more recently, Virtue products.
Use no more than 3 styling products
Once you switch to a professional shampoo and conditioner or cleanser, you won’t need styling products like before. You can toss the extra styling gels and creams and stick to 1 to 3 styling products only.
As a lazy girl myself, I only use one product to leave in the hair when it’s damp. Sometimes I’ll use a couple of drops of Hair Oil from Hairstory, and other times I’ll use the Fab.Me leave-in spray from Design.Me.
Once you find what your hair likes, you can alternate between your favorite 3 products.
Use a wand to curl your hair for special occasions
When you’re lazy, the last thing you want to do is curl your hair in perfect proportions or blow dry it with a round brush section by section. The solution? Use a wand. The magical size is 1.25 inches, which will give you beautiful tousled beach waves. I love the Hot Tools Curlbar in 1.25 inches. It’s ergonomic and easy on your arms.
Why do I recommend a wand over a curling iron? Because it’s more forgiving. You can grab random sections of your hair, twist the mids, leaving the ends out, brush and go!
Find a hairstylist and haircut you love
Sticking to one hairstylist will help you so much, because you won’t have to do too much thinking. They’ll suggest the looks that would look best on you and that will work best with your lifestyle. They’ll choose haircuts that are on trend, and they won’t do anything you don’t like, while maintaining an open conversation on how to help you love your hair.
This same stylist will also help you find a haircut that you love, that’s easy to maintain and that fits your lifestyle. Once you find this haircut, your life will be so easy and you can spend your days doing all the more important things.
[BONUS TIP] Keep it dark
Dark hair is the easiest hair to maintain. It camouflages dryness and damage by reflecting the light. Blonde, red, or colored hair, on the other hand, is a lot of maintenance. And it can get pretty pricey once you start factoring in all the products and salon visits. The best haircolor is your own natural color.
If you’re finding your color is feeling dull, ask your hairstylist to tone it to add a gloss that can last up to 20 washes.
