How to Shadow Root Your Hair At Home Like A Pro

Have you ever wanted to give yourself your blonde highlights or balayage a refresh without having to go to the salon? In this 8-minute video I’ll show you how you can create depth, dimension, remove warmth and make your blonde even blonder at home in less than 30 mins.

But first, let’s talk about what a shadow root technique is.

What is a shadow root?

A shadow root has multiple names: root shadow, root smudge, root tap, root melt, or root stretch.

Shadow rooting basically means that a darker shade of demi-permanent color, or toner, is applied to the roots of the hair, creating depth and a natural-looking shadow effect. This gives your blonde a soft transition between the natural root and the highlights or balayage.

Benefits to a shadow root:

  1. A shadow root helps create a beautiful dimensional color that you wouldn’t otherwise get with regular highlights. It helps transition your highlights or balayage seamlessly.

  2. If you have natural warmth in your hair and want to remove it, we would apply the same level as your natural color in a cooler tone to remove the warmth, which is what I did here. I didn’t like my new re-growth, and I was seeing warm roots grow in, so I used Joico demi-permanent color in 6NA — N is for Natural and A is for Ash.

  3. My favorite thing about a shadow root is it gives you less maintenance in between salon visits, allowing your color to grow out softly and naturally.

In this video I show you step by step how to do this beautiful, easy technique at home.

If you have someone who can help you, it would definitely make your life easier, but you can absolutely do this by yourself. Just follow the tutorial and make sure you section your hair really well!

Here are all the products I used to achieve this look. I love love my Framar brushes. Please don’t use cheap ones because they won’t give you a soft blend, and we want the softest blend.
